The ritual of Palo Santo is traditionally used in South America in a similar way to how Native Americans use the Smudge sticks for cleansing and purifying negative energy and to clear misfortune.

Burning these sticks is a sacred practice used by Indigenous communities to cleanse their space and ward off evil spirits. This practice is called smudging – a spiritual practice where you clear your energy fields.

How to Light Palo Santo - Light the tip till it has caught the flame, then waft the flame out. You can either use your Palo Santo like a usual incense stick and let it smoke as it gently burns down or you can hold onto your stick. When smudging, try to feel connected with a power greater than yourself. You may say prayers while using a feather, or simply the palm of your hand, to brush the smoke over you.

Meditation - Burn your stick and allow the scent to cleanse your home before meditation to purify the energy in the room.

Space Clearing - To clear stuck, heavy or bad energy in the home, light up a stick, hold it with your hand and walk around the area you want to remove the bad energy from.

You don't have to burn the whole stick during a ritual only for as long as your ritual lasts. Re-light if your stick extinguishes you may need to repeat this a few times during your ritual.
